Seat 61

Logo, Visual identity, Website design

Originally created as a hobby by Mark Smith, Seat61.com is a personal site dedicated to making rail travel across Europe practical, accessible, and inspiring. This self-initiated redesign set out to solve two primary goals: build a consistent visual identity system and modernise the digital experience.

The rebrand unifies all touchpoints under the name “Seat 61”, eliminating past confusion with “The Man in Seat Sixty-One.” This shift leverages existing brand equity while making the identity more inclusive—positioning every traveller as the protagonist of their own journey. The logo mark serves as a minimalist anchor, combining a window frame, directional travel cues, and an ‘S’ letterform set at a 45° angle—a subtle nod to classic transit design. Its abstraction invites personal interpretation, evoking snaking train carriages, winding rivers, or mountain ranges.

To replace the outdated look, the identity introduces a fresh, balanced colour palette anchored by Navy Blue and Warm Amber, supported by Muted Slate and Crimson. The typography pairs a Helvetica logotype with Pangram Pangram’s Neue Montreal for body copy and headings, delivering high legibility and a clear hierarchy reminiscent of classic railway signage.

The website redesign addresses the previous clutter by introducing an open, scannable layout with generous whitespace aligned with modern browsing expectations. Retaining the site’s original spirit, vivid retro-inspired illustrations serve as hero graphics to capture the romance of rail travel, while five active Swiss-inspired station clocks for international timezones add a functional, playful touch to the footer.

Together, these elements form a cohesive, adaptable system built to scale across social media, YouTube, merchandise, and a modernised, easy-to-use digital experience.
